Description
For Alydar
You graced our world
With your heart and your speed
Now gone, not forgotten
Taken from us, we grieve.
Your spirit is with us,
Your legacy timeless.
In the quiet of dawn, hoofbeats remind us
Of the gifts you left us to remember you by
Your beauty, your presence, the light in your eye.
Still looking upon us
That face with a star
Reveal us your secrets
Our Brave Alydar
by Sandra Pratt Silva
I painted Alydar from a photograph purchased from the Tony Leonard Collection.
It was taken on Travers Day at Saratoga in 1978. Oil on 10 x 10 panel
Alydar was a gifted racehorse who will always be known for his determination and spirit in his famous rivalry with Affirmed in the Triple Crown races of 1978. He is also remembered as a major leading sire of many successful offspring. Two important authors examine the history of his life and untimely death at Calumet Farm in November 1990: Ann Hagedorn wrote "Wild Ride" in the early 90's and Fred M. Kray wrote "Broken", published in 2023. "Broken" is an important update to "Wild Ride", as the author, an animal attorney, investigates all the information that came out of the trials by federal prosecutors almost ten years following Alydar's death. Many Thanks to these two authors who have brought this magnificent horse's story to light. Alydar never gave up. Either should we.
